The Founder’s Story
From Calgary to Tokyo to Kuala Lumpur
Blaine Robert’s path to Dubai’s finest addresses began a long way from the Gulf. Canadian by birth, he graduated from the University of Calgary in 1986 and spent two years honing his craft at home before a fascination with Japanese architecture and minimalist design carried him to Tokyo in 1988 — where he worked as a freelance designer for the next twelve years, absorbing a discipline of restraint and precision that still shapes every room he designs today.
A decade of travel through Asia followed before Blaine settled in Malaysia in 2005, where his adventurous, unconventional eye quickly found an audience among clients, developers and architects. He founded Blaine Robert Design in Kuala Lumpur in 2014, building the studio’s reputation the unfashionable way — designing and building homes personally, one commission at a time.
That reputation has since earned him repeated invitations to judge Malaysia’s most prestigious interior design and property award events, and led, in time, to villa commissions in Dubai, Doha and Saudi Arabia — and to the Business Bay studio that carries his name today.

Recognition
Awarded, not just admired
Blaine Robert Design's work has been recognised across three major honours — the Luxury Lifestyle Awards, ATAP Design Awards and Qanvast Design Awards — alongside Blaine's own appointment as an invited judge of the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards, evaluating the region's finest residential and hospitality design.
These honours sit alongside something harder to award: 250+ completed projects across Malaysia, Singapore, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and a 4.9-star client record built one home at a time. Recognition follows the work — it has never been the point of it.
Three decades of recognition, now practiced from Dubai.
Meet the Dubai StudioThe Dubai atelier
Our Dubai practice, BR Design LLC in Business Bay, brings the house to its most demanding stage: villas on the Palm, penthouses over the Marina, private palaces across the GCC — with villa commissions to date in Dubai, Doha and Saudi Arabia.
Here the studio is design-first by intention: vision, interior architecture, bespoke detail, FF&E and styling under one authorship, with realisation arranged to suit each commission and directed by the studio throughout.
Clients who choose the Dubai studio are typically building or reinventing a primary residence they intend to keep for a generation — which is why every commission here begins with the same question first asked in Kuala Lumpur in 2014: not what looks impressive today, but what will still feel right in twenty years.
